The traditional bridal trousseau or hope chest, began in France and came from the French word trousse, meaning bundle.

French Wedding Reception

A wedding toast is made to the newlyweds sometime during the traditional French wedding reception. Following this toast, they drink, as husband and wife, from a specially engraved, double handled goblet, usually a family heirloom passed down from generation to generation.

After the wedding reception, and even later into the couple’s wedding night, friends of the wedding couple might show up outside their window banging pots and pans, singing boisterous tunes. The groom is expected to invite them in for drinks and snacks.

I’m in Louisiana – and I have never been to Las Vegas (unless you count watching “Vegas Vacation”…) Where am I going to stay? How will I find the right hotel on such short notice? Will I be forced to find my own Elvis impersonator just to sleep at his place?

When all of your arrangements have been made: the location, cars and entertainment booked, and an exotic honeymoon on the horizon, do not overlook a subject that could possibly mar the wedding - children , or more bluntly or, rather, whether they should attend.

Certainly, inviting children may cause problems. Let’s be honest about this. To the average small child, weddings are a total bore. They have to spend hours hanging around in unfamiliar smart clothes. A church service is not exactly designed as children’s entertainment (after all, even some of the adult visitors find it a trifle boring…) The events of the day which are often the very opposite of their usual routine at home hardly fit in with their routine. Their demands for attention are ignored because people are too busy with the wedding formalities - or meeting people they haven’t seen in years.

All this makes them very receptive to the general air of excitement around them - and this is when high spirits can take over.

With all the tons of advice published about wedding arrangements, you will find little or nothing about how to deal with the children.

You have some choices.

1. The ‘No Children’ rule

Some wedding horror stories include a wedding where the top table was completely demolished, cake and all, by children careering around and pulling at the tablecloth … During the speeches, they ran up and down the hall around the tables, squealing and shrieking. … Occasionally a guest - not a parent - tried to stop them. They thought that was part of the game - and got worse …None of their parents made a move to stop them. Nobody could hear a word.

To promote better understanding, you couldring up to explain your decision, rather than merely adding a bald statement to the invitation.

Do not feel bad, lots of parents would prefer to go to a wedding with a babysitter at home looking after their precious children. Lots of children are at weddings, because relatives think that the little ones are expected to attend, not because the parents want them to be there cramping their style and quashing their enjoyment of an adult celebration.

2. You could allow children at your wedding but remember this is not a kiddies birthday party so if possible keep their numbers as low as possible.

Remember that at a wedding, the responsibility has to be on the parent of the child to make sure that a child’s behaviour does not cause worry and distress to anyone at the wedding.

So, here are some helpful suggestions which might be useful to distribute to parents -if you can do so diplomatically…

* Parents should decide beforehand, who will be the one to take a fretful son or daughter out of the church.
* Ask parents with small children to sit near the back of the church if possible so that you can leave with a minimum of fuss.
* Parents should take small, quiet toys or books into the church for young child to play with.
* Little packets of raisins can be eaten without making a mess and too much sound and will fill another 10 minutes.
* Ask someone to make sure that parents with children where the toilets are before the service starts.
* Appoint a guest a special usher to assist parents at the church service - this person should help the parents with children to an appropriate place towards the back of the churh, explain where the toilets are and hand out little kiddy welcome packs to help pass the time during the service
* For the reception dinner, make sure that there are child friendly meals for all children. Not all kids like foie gras or salmon with asparagus. Ask the caterers what child’s meals they offer and make sure that parents are given the options.
* If parents have a child who is a particularly fastidious faddy eater, then sugest that they take along a sandwich for him to have at the reception.
* An excited hungry child is much worse than just an excited child
* Make sure that parents are told if punch is alcoholic so that young kids are given strict instructs and do not get paralytic and have to be rushed to hospital
* Enquirewhether there is a place where kids can run off steam and all of their excitement
* Is there a quiet spot available so that young children can have their usual afternoon [/spin]sleep|nap[/spin].
* Young children simply are not capable of sitting and listening to long speeches so if they are not asleep parents should be expected to take turns to entertain them or walk around with them
* if a child becomes tired and over-excited it is time for the parents to leave or to hand the tired little angel over to a resident babysitter

3. You could invite only a handful of children and limit children to only close relatives. Hopefully you know these children well and will have some idea how they will behave and how responsible their parents will be. Often children just attend the church service and are handed to a babysitter for the reception. This is a great compromise. The kiddies can be there for some group family photographs and not possibly mar the evening celebration.

Chateau Chenonceau

Chenonceau Chateau amazes you with its two-story, 260-foot Great Gallery spanning across the River Cher. Originally “acquired” by King Francois I, it passed to his successor, Henri II, who gave it to Diane de Poitiers his mistress. Diane expanded the castle and constructed a bridge over the river.

When Henri II died, his wife, Catherine de Medici, took revenge on her rival by forcing Diane to exchange Chateau Chenonceau for nearby Chateau Chaumont. Catherine then commissioned the construction of the bridge gallery. Unbelievably extravagant galas were hosted here until Catherine’s son, Henry III, was murdered. His wife, Louise de Savoie, placed the castle in mourning, furnishing it entirely in black and white.

History leaps out as you tour the rooms and the gardens. In world war I the Great Gallery was converted to a hospital. In WWII the castle marked the boundary between free and Nazi-occupied France and became the site of prisoner exchanges. Today the castle and grounds are maintained at their height as if they were at under Catherine de Medici.

Chateau Clos Luce

Not more than a half mile from the village centre is Chateau Le Clos Luce, a castle built and designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Under the generous sponsorship of Francois I’ he lived the last three years of his life here. The rooms are filled with 40 models of Leonardo’s inventions so you can marvel at his impressive mental powers and foresight five hundred years earlier.

Chateau Amboise

The narrow cobbled streets of Amboise wind at the base of the huge Chateau Amboise. Although only 25% of the original castle survives, the fortress walls with flying banners look down river and the village at its feet. It was here that King Francois I hit his head on a low arch, bringing an early end to his life.

Chateau Chambord

King Francois I was not content with just the castles at Amboise and Chenonceau. He acquired over 10,000 acres of hunting land and decided to build the world’s most incredible “hunting lodge.” Chambord was constructed over many decades by Francois and his successors, Henri II and Charles IX in the 16th century.

Fully restored now, Chambord stands as the most extravagant of all the Loire chateaux - 500 feet wide with 440 rooms and 365 fireplaces. The central grand staircase was supposedly designed by the great Italian, Leonardo da Vinci. It has double spirals which enable two parties of people to climb and descend simultaneously on foot or horseback without meeting. Chambord will reward any visit with its grandeur and extravagance.

Chateau Chaumont-sur-Loire

Built in the fifteenth century by Lord Amboise on the site of a tenth century feudal fortress, Chaumont commands incredible views of the Loire Valley. It was later the home of both Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici of Castle Chenonceau fame. Enjoy this castle for its furnishings, drawbridge, fortress feeling, tapestry, and incredible vistas.

“A well filled day gives a good sleep. A well filled life gives a peaceful death.” After only three years in Amboise, he died on May 2, 1519 and is buried in the Chapelle St. Hubert on the chateau’s grounds.

The chateau is open to tourists every day of the year except Christmas Day and New Years Day.

The King encouraged discussion, experimentation and much thought here. In this pretty chateau, he happily continued to paint, sketch, and work as an engineer, architect, and festival organizer for the court. Francois I found great peace in listening to Leonardo.

Da Vinci arrived at Amboise over 60 years old with his disciple da Melzi and three paintings, Saint Anne, Saint John the Baptist which he finished at Clos Luce and the Mona Lisa.

It is situated on a quiet back street of Amboise, a town south of the Loire River between Tours and Blois about 2 hours from Paris by train. The village street has troglodyte houses opposite built into the limestone cliff face.

Da Vinci’s chateau is not large, but it is warm, inviting and personable. You get a sense of his life in the early 16th century as you wander unescorted throughout the sparsely decorated chateau. The chateau is surrounded by a magnificent treed park with a bubbling brook and peaceful pond with paddle boats available to hire. There is a tiny formal Renaissance garden in the courtyard behind the chateau with perfumed roses and clipped box hedges. It is peaceful, ideal for bird watching, conversation and quiet contemplation.

You can visit his study, salons, kitchen and bedrooms, the chapel and see frescoes painted by his pupils. Renaissance artifacts, paintings, tapestries, and furniture adorn the rooms which have high, timbered ceilings, huge fireplaces and well worn plank flooring.

There is a large four poster canopied bed in Leonardo’s bedroom swayed with gold and red fabric. Cherubs are carved into the dark wood on his bed.

It is most likely that the yellow salon bathed in light, functioned as studio space for Leonardo. It is probably here that he finished his painting of John the Baptist.

The kitchen has a huge fire big enough to spit-roast a wild boar whole. In winter Leonardo would have warmed himself beside this fire.

His paintings and drawings are set out in the park of the chateau with giant models of the most spectacular machines he invented with voice-overs of Leonardo da Vinci and his disciple Melzi.

In a corner of the basement is an entrance to the underground passage connecting Chateau Amboise with Clos Luce, giving Francois I a direct link to the Leonardo’s home.

Downstairs in the basement, 40 models made by IBM from Leonardo’s drawings are displayed. These military, naval, hydraulic, mechanical, and aeronautical inventions demonstrate his sheer genius. Many of these designs were envisioned centuries before they were first constructed. Devices such as swing bridges, a machine gun, a flying machine and an automobile all show sound principles of design.
